An Army veteran who went to a Veterans Administration hospital in Lexington, Ky., is suing, claiming a nurse improperly iced his penis for 19 hours.
Michael Nash, 61, went to the VA hospital in October 2010 for a penile implant and circumcision, The Associated Press reported Wednesday.
After the surgery,he claims, a nurse iced his penis so severely he got gangrene.
"It basically caused frostbite on his penis, which eventually caused gangrene," Nash's attorney Larry Jones told the AP. "In addition to robbing someone of their manhood, they've robbed him of the simple ability to urinate just like every other person who lives in this world."
The Veterans Administration didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's questions about Nash's suit, which was filed Tuesday.
Nash originally filed a civil claim with the government but the Department of Veterans Affairs rejected it this summer, saying the department and its employees weren't negligent.
"It's about the most blatant medical malpractice error one could make," Jones said. "It's a senseless tragedy that should never have happened."
